There are several reasons why a pitcher makes it onto the Do Not Draft list. Maybe it is an injury concern, maybe it is because their draft position seems way too high, or maybe it is because they are a 6-foot-4, 218lb guy who choked his girlfriend before randomly firing off his gun.
Plenty of other fantasy baseball websites will advise you not to draft a pitcher due to reduced velocity or the lack of bite on the splitter. But here at Deep League Roto, we tell you not to draft someone if you wouldn’t be happy having a beer with them.
Our 2023 suggestions will appear here shortly, but in the meantime, check out our 2022 list of shame below.
Trevor Bauer
I used to love watching Bauer pitch. I loved his fragility, his determination, the way he wore his heart on his sleeve. However, the off-field issues make it too difficult to have him on my fantasy team. I don’t want to be sitting there looking at my roster and longing for him to return.
His ADP suggests he will prove a bargain for someone, but not us.
Julio Urías
This is another tough one, as Urias could take another step up this season. There are so many starters available; you don’t need one who was arrested for domestic battery and then suspended by MLB.
Domingo Germán
The Yankees’ starter was suspended for four times as many games as Urias. At the time, Germán’s suspension was the fourth-longest issued by MLB since the implementation of its domestic-violence policy in 2015.
Aroldis Chapman
Never pay for saves. Never draft a 6-foot-4 guy who (allegedly) choked his girlfriend after an argument over some text messages on his phone and then fired eight shots from a handgun. He received a 30-game suspension.
